What is it?

The browser real time black hole would be a browser plugin which intercepts navigation to web sites based on an updated list of sites which they do not want to patronize. The interception page displayed to the user would list what site they attempted to go to, why it was in their list of sites they do not wish to patronize, and alternate sites which provided similar products/services/information. It would also contain a link which would allow them to continue on to the intercepted site.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of the User Browser RBL would be to allow users to effectively boycott a category of sites (say anti-consumer sites or sites of DMCA abusers) in real time by not patronizing them. User Browser RBL empowers the user to vote with their traffic and money by patronize websites with policies, practices, and positions in which they believe in.

The idea was originally conceived to allow users to filter out all websites of companies (read corporations) which abuse the DMCA. Companies which abuse the DMCA usually have huge sprawling infrastructures and sometimes it is not possible to know which sites a user should be boycotting as the companies have their fingers in many different pies. The User Browser RBL is a comprehensive way to filter all such sites.

What is the implimenation?

Constructing a browser based real time black hole is relatively simple and consists of a few simple components.

1. A browser plugin. In Internet Explorer it is known as a BHO or Browser Helper Object. Source code for creating browser helper objects is readily available.

2. A website which catalogs and stores lists of websites which the user can contribute to, customize, or create. Additionally users could vote to have sites excluded or included in the list of sites in which they want "filtered".

How it works?

The first time the browser is used each day it downloads a list of sites to filter (black hole) for the user. The list is cached for 24 hours.

The browser checks the domain name of the site before it is navigated to and if the domain name is in the list of filtered (black holed) sites it displays the interception page.

The interception page displays what site they attempted to go to, why it was filtered (black holed), alternate but similar sites, and a link which allows them to continue on to the intercepted site.
