Congratulations To Alex For His 1st Place Win At The 2016-2017 CSUB Research Competition

Intern Alex Rinaldi won 1st place in the Engineering and Computer Sciences category at the 2016-2017 California State University, Bakersfield Student Research Competition. Alex will be moving on to present at the statewide competition hosted at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in April.

In Alex’s research, he enlarged and enhanced low-quality images to get high-quality images without the need for more expensive equipment. The application is to enlarge thermal images of solar panels to make hot spot detection easier, or to detect damaged areas that need to be replaced without the need for high quality thermal cameras.

We wish Alex the best of luck during his presentation at Cal Poly SLO!

Peacekeeper Interns To Present At International Conference

Peacekeeper Interns Alex Rinaldi, Omar Oseguera and JoAnn Tuazon were recently accepted to present at the 19th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction for their work in Machine Learning and Sentiment Analysis. The group started their project as part of their senior seminar at Cal State Bakersfield.

In their research, the team used a corpus of therapy transcripts, performed sentiment analysis (detection of emotion in text), and used machine learning to predict whether a transcript showed signs of suicidal ideation or not.

Additionally, the team has conducted research in using Recurrent Neural Networks for response generation. The team hopes to train the RNNs with their other work in order to create a suicide-prevention chat application.

Two poster abstracts will be presented  in Vancouver, Canada this summer.
